I’ve just googled it. According to http://www.thefreedictionary.com/porte-cochere

    1. A carriage entrance leading through a building or wall into an inner courtyard.

The above would apply to an arch onto a quadrangle. In this situation whee it passes through a building as a “carriage entrance” it is essentially the same as a carriage arch.

Do you have any experience in carpentry? If you do it shouldn’t be too hard to get a contract for the summer. If you don’t on the other hand, you may find that all that is available is labourer’s position. Won’t be as technical but if it quaifies for the course then why not.

Think the question was aimed more at the case of two applications for the same building, for example, A two story domestic extension application is lodged, family are unsure if it will be apprroved. Time is an issue so they also lodge a single story application which they are fairly confidant that it is acceptable. If 2 story is granted, they go ahead and build. If refused the sigle story extension is only a week or so away.

Not sure how acceptable the situation above is. Anybody know for sure.

I hate this revsionism of street and place names. Leave well alone. Also why is it always famous writers…all the new bridges are being called after writers.

Can you suggest any other “famous” types to name tham after. The only other people used are the rebels, and they’re pretty much all used now.

It’s a domestic extension right. There is some space to work with but it’s going to be fairly limited in size and posibilities.
Maybe posting what you have in mind would help us get an idea of your plan. Or PM me if you’d rather.

I have no problem with the early stages, planning and so on. But the construction and seeing it through to the end would take its time. time I may not if it isn’t finished by say early october when i start my final year. And I would want to get too committed incase problems arise.

Is it really to much af a problem to project manager it yoursef. Shouldn’t be too much in small job.

Agreed. I can’t believe it could be there for three years without somebody noticing and it becomming public knowledge. Even three months is probably pushing it.

If you wake past it, even stopped and read it. Would you think it was anything other than a legitimate plaque. May of thought it strange that you never heard of “Fr Pat Noise”. But would you of doubted it. Ands thats only if you have a change to stop and wait on the bridge, most people are hurrying accross it.

 …and did you notice that “fr pat noise” is an anagram of “pater of sin”?….the plot thickens

I was thinking along the anagram lines earlier. If you expand pat to patrick or Fr. to father the lsit goes on and on. I think we may need to wait to hear the cause.

I just like to find out what it means, somebody must of had a reason behind the name. I’d be a little dissappointed if it was just random.

As a student, I don’t have or know of any student that have professional insurance. Are you looking for somebody to do the planning and tender drawings for a builder. Or are you looking for somebody to be involved right through to completion

I seen this on the news last night, but couldn’t find the story on the web to post it. Very strange indeed.
It can’t be just a random thing, must be an allusion to something. But nobody has ever heard of him.

Looks even better now. Any more on the way.

While we’re on topic. I got Auto Cad 2007 the other day, I the 3D feature has com on leaps and bounds. The old technical way is still there. But they have added a new modelling feature. It is practically the same as sketch up but with the extra features of Cad.
Have yet to give it a good try out but looks very promising. For people who do the basics in a Cad program and export it to sketch up, it should save alot of time.

Well its a one off house so precast wont work becaue the sizes are all standard.
I just wanted other peoples experiences with one-off chimneys- ie do they use glavanised starps to attach blocks to the capping.Just hoping the capping won’t blow off!!!!!!

Probably possible to steel mesh/bars fixed in place before the concrete is poured. If bricks with voids in the centre are used. The concrete will flow into these and provide support from the wind.
I’d still check around for a pre-cast unit. you’d be surprised at what you can find.

Yeah the mesh is important, If the screed is thick enough it is not needed everywhere, but its is always wise to use it over pipe and services in the screed.

Yes, Dublin City council has decided to grant permission for the above. There are conditions attached but they appear to be pretty standard. Things like working hours on site, conservation architect and oh a contribution to DCC of €17,000

danish oil is a good one but will have to be re-treated every five years, it should then have a lifespan of 20-30 years. The batten system means it’s easy to replace the timber after that length of time.

The lifespan you quoted seams a little short compare with some i’ve heard and examples i’ve seen. Untreated cedar would last that long a good treatment and care it is possible to get longer, but I suppose time will tell

I am thinking of a cast in situ capping on 4 blocks laid on the side but Im not sure how I am going to fix them.

A precast coping would be alot easier than in-situ if you are going to use a brick chimney. When you say fix them to, what exactly are you refering to?
