Im no great fan of the bridge. It is a product of the heavy rail/industrial age and I guess you might have a passing interest in its engineering detail. The billboards and adds are stereotypical of most western “commercial” cities….indeed advertising and billboards are elements that I personally enjoy when abroad…they are sometimes a synopsis of local culture….so they dont really bother me.
As for a replacement bridge, ABC is my mantra…Anyone But Calatrava. Much as I have admired some of his earlier work, I believe it has lost its fundamentalism and has evolved into a “house” style that has become over complex and ornate.
In any event, should a new bridge be entertained as a proposal, the real impact on the public will be further disruption of public transport network…not a bankable political policy around election time…I wouldnt be holding my breath!
