ParticipantWhat do people think of the plans for Ballincollig Town centre which has just commenced construction.
Just for a bit of background info the development is taking place on the site of a former army barracks which occupies the entire right hand side of the main street in the town. The plans are extensive and include a mixture of retail, office, residential and car parking. A new information centre has just opened on the main street in Ballincollig if anyone is interested.

Participantwas talking to a punter from that neck of the woods who tells be that the bypass been build down there is nearly finished. it was done by some turkish road builders who managed to do it within time and budget and cause very little disrutpion in the process. any truth in this?

ParticipantThe bypass is being built by turks but designed and project managed by irish consultants. Its going to make a huge difference to the village by the end of the year removing all the through traffic heading to Macroom and Killarney etc.

ParticipantCould I revive this thread? The latest casualty of modernisation in Ballincollig is the planned demolition of the old garda station. This is a Victorian red brick building which used to house adjutants from the barracks.
A new garda station is currently under construction-not before time- but sadly the OPW/Garda Siochana have deemed there is little architectural merit in the old station and it is due to be razed to make way for a car park for the new station. Ballincollig Heritage Association have launched a last minute ipetition: see http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/save_old_ballincollig_garda_station/ - July 20, 2010 at 5:24 pm #742519

ParticipantA photo of ]old station is on the petition. It used to be flanked to the left by another similar house which was in a derelict condiiton. The most recent photo shows the new unfinished station about 15 feet from the old building which stands above the Main Street rather like an island. See attachment
