The original Andersonstown Leisure Centre building was designed by architect D.J. MacRandal in 1979, and comprised a 25m pool, learner pool, sports hall, gym and cafe. Since substantially redeveloped. The exterior was memorable for its sculpted concrete panels which dominated the facade. Standing four metres high it features rendered concrete relief sculpture, with quasi-celtic symbols. In 2017 a spokesman for Belfast City Council said: “It is anticipated that a portion of the wall will be retained for posterity, however this depends on the result of further investigation by the contractor in terms of ease of removal and disassembly.”
