1973 – James Joyce Library, University College Dublin
Designed by John Hardie Glover of modernist Scottish firm, Spence Glover Ferguson after an international competition held in 1966. It was conceived as the geographic centre of the Belfield campus. The James Joyce Library is the central branch of the UCD Library system, housing Arts, Celtic Studies, Human Sciences, Business (Undergraduate), Law, Science, Agriculture, Civil & Biosystems Engineering. A large sprawling building with massive concrete louvres as brise-soleils, its size is reduced visually by differing heights and the horizontal lines of the louvres. The first phase was completed in 1973, with the second phase not completed until 1986 due to budgetary constraints. Refurbished internally by Reddy A+U in 2022.
