1969 – Wesley College, Ballinteer, Co. Dublin
Design selected after a limited competition for the new school in 1964. Wesley College sold their extensive buildings in Dublin’s city centre in 1969 and moved to a 50-acre site with mature trees on a sloping site in Ballinteer, a suburb of Dublin.
The winning design by Robin Walker placed a series of two-storey buildings on the sloped site in parallel lines but randomly spaced. Externally clad in cream-coloured bricks, with black steel window frames, and bands of concrete creating a familial feel between the blocks. The ancillary school buildings surround the colonnaded main classroom block at the centre creating a campus feel different from the traditional large single school block. The gaps in between include paved terraces and outdoor space. The 1969 campus was added to in 1980, 1987, and 1991.
