1947 – Shriners’ Hospital, Wellington Crescent, Winnipeg
Architect: George Teeter
Officially the Shriners’ Hospital for Crippled Children, part of a network of 16 similar hospitals across North America. Designed by Winnipeg architect George Teeter in a postwar institutional style – its main architectural feature was the large hexastyle portico on the front. It was intended as a larger replacement to an existing facility that had opened at the Children’s Hospital in 1925. Constructed started in 1947 with the official opening in 1959, and closure in 1977. It was taken over by the Manitoba provincial government and renamed the Rehabilitation Centre for Children. It finally closed in May 2016 and was demolished in 2022.
