1905 – Canadian Emigration Offices, 9 Charing Cross, London
Architect: Alfred Hart, Hart & Waterhouse
The Canadian Department of the Interior’s immigration campaign included the establishment of this office which was responsible for setting up programs to attract immigrants from the United Kingdom. One such program that it sponsored was an essay-writing contest for school children. The grand prize was free passage for the child’s family to Canada and a free homestead. The program proved to be so popular that immigration agents from Australia copied it.
