Unsuccessful entry in architectural competition to design a memorial for Queen Victoria for the front of Buckingham Palace.

“We give this week the plan of Mr. Ernest George’s design for the Victoria Memorial, with the view of the ornamental place near the palace, and a view of the triumphal arch at the east end of the processional road. We have already commented fully on the design in our article of the 2nd inst., and the architect has no special remarks to offer. In regard to the arch, or rather gateway screen, while we think it a very charming composition, we may observe that it conveys more the idea of being an entrance to a park than a royal or national triumphal arch.”
