One of the earliest artificial skating rinks in the world was constructed at Southport. The foundation stone was laid by Lord Clarence Paget on April 5th,

Developed by the Southport Hotel Company (funded mainly by Manchester merchants), the Birkdale Palace Hotel was built on a 20 acre site fronting the Birkdale shore.
The Arcade first opened in October 1898 and was originally called the Leyland Arcade, after Southport MP,
