Hoban’s final Executive Mansion design. The earlier design of a three-story residence was modified at the request of then President George Washington for reasons of economy.
Hoban, James (1762-1831)
James Hoban was born in Desart, near Callan, County Kilkenny. Having studied architecture at the Dublin Society School, he emigrated to the United States and soon established himself as an architect in Philadelphia.
