James Hoban was born in Desart, near Callan, County Kilkenny. Having studied architecture at the Dublin Society School, he emigrated to the United States and soon established himself as an architect in Philadelphia.
A memorial garden has been opened to commemorate the Irish-born architect who designed and built the White House in Washington DC.
A memorial to the Kilkenny-born architect of the White House, James Hoban, is being unveiled this evening, 100 yards from his birthplace near Callan.
