The station for the mainline Dublin-Sligo rail route is a grander affair than the local narrow gauge station but still modest in comparison to stations in the larger Irish towns.
A variant of Wilkinson’s standard design along this line, Ballymote opened on 3 December 1862.
Similar in design to Dromod Station on the same line by the same architect, this is a fine solid Victorian railway station,
Large District lunatic asylum erected to a design by George Wilkinson (1814-90). It has a symmetrical plan comprising nine-bay two-storey central block centred on three-bay two-storey pedimented projecting breakfront with five-bay two-storey projecting “pavilions”
Fine Victorian office accommodation complete with elegant chimneys and good quality ironwork. Well maintained, it provides a public face for the brewery to the street.
