I see that the Ulster Bank is one of the opponents of the building who have made a submission to the Planning Board

The thing about the ESB building is that it actually replicates the rhythm of the previous Georgian buildings through dividing the facade into a similar number of divisions as there were houses.
From that point of view it is reasonably sensitive and doesnt break the streetscape up unduely but overall its a pretty poor building with little or no interest at streetlevel.

Yes…. and the river is so narrow there… with Calatrave you really need a nice long span with the Liffey is such a small river by European standards, that the bridge is going to look bulky…

Yeah, i saw the article. I didn’t think there was anything new in it – it contained all the usual posturing that this ‘select’ group of architects have been peddling for years.

As to the suggestion that STW be involved, I’m glad BTH said ‘even Scott Tallon Walker would do a better job than what is being proposed’… the thoughs of STW getting another chance to roll out the same design in another city venur is scary – look at the Smurfit Building at Lincoln Place, Wood Quay, the Engineering Building in UCD – the same bland motifs and use of materials. Granted the inside of the Wood Quay building is quite impressive but the overwhelming sense is one of banality and safety in design.

It could be important for our film industry…. look at the London Docklands – wwhenever TV of Film requires a streetscape of modern block with no people – they film it there……

That is entirely possible…. however an concerted campaign against the SOM proposal is underway and I imagine if successful, will continue on against the older PP.
