ParticipantHi Jack,
Talk to a company called Rheinzink, we are using their product on some work we are doing down at the new toll plaza canopy at the port tunnel and we have been very impressed with the product.
+44 (0) 1276 686725, they should be able to put you in touch with an Irish supplier.
They also supply rather tasty Rain Water Goods.
Cheers

ParticipantPS Brian, could you email me a couple of images of your scheme, we are always interested to see other entries.

ParticipantHi Brian,
Thanks for your comments on our scheme. We too took the approach that whatever we brought to the site it had to act as a “gateway” to the causeway and although our accommodation was loacted under ground the portal / gallery gateway would always be the primary element to our design.
I think it is interesting that 1st prize is an understated scheme yet 2nd prize is quite the opposite. Perhaps the Jury shortlisted a number of underground schemes, a number of highrise schemes etc – Then picked the best from each section and finally arrived at an overall winner.

ParticipantWe have done fit-out work for bars, restaurants and are currently working on a fit-out for a 5500 sq/ft Farm Shop in Northern Ireland. We have also completed medical fit-outs for a private hospital in Cork.
My advice would be that you need a professional consultant to manage the project. This will at least save you their fee.
Feel free to drop me an email with a little more information on your scheme and I will be happy to help in any way I can.
Cheers

ParticipantSo good to see this project progressing. Does anyone know anything about how the buildings will be designed. Developer led, Competition etc?

ParticipantWelcome Derry User
I think in general the Northern Ireland Users are very quiet on this board. Lets get the discussions going about the North.

ParticipantI have spoken to a few computer / IT buffs over the years and they told me that DELL are the only brand name / pre-built PC they would buy. I assume that applies to their lap-tops. Other than that they would only advise a hand built machine from an Independent. I have a TIME lap-top and touch wood it is trouble free (apart from a dodgy CD/DVD ROM drive that will not read CD-R disks.)
Go for at least 512Mb of RAM though 1GB would be better. Most new laptops have quite powerful processors, 2.4 + so you will be fine there. For using CAD consider a wide-screen. As much screen “real-estate” as possible helps with the eyes. Try to get a DVD writer for backing up and a nice big hard drive.

ParticipantPersonally I do not feel I need a retained Prison to remind me of the struggle that this country has endured over the years. Though I do feel that a visitors centre would be useful to educate the next generations and visitors to N.I as to the true conflict within this country. Is the maze the correct place for this?
The second debate that this thread raises – Does Northern Ireland need a national stadium? And is the MAZE site the correct location for this?

ParticipantWhy must we feel the need to make a Legacy of the worst period of our History? Lets move forward. 🙂

ParticipantIf the Judges are now aware of who has entered they will, and it is only human nature, look for the “zaha hadid” style scheme. (im using zaha as she has a very obvious style) And with that in mind it could cloud their judgement. It shouldn,t but some of the entrants may be worried that it could. If the judge then has an idea who a scheme is by they may judge the scheme on the firms experience in such projects and not the scheme. Again the shouldnt but it could happen.

ParticipantYet another competition we entered!! I should extend this thread. Do we have any opinions on the “open competition”. Are they worth entering?
