The Adelphi was designed by W.R Glen in association with Robert Donnelly. Glen was an English architect.
Paul ClerkinKeymasterThis is the postbox on Lower Baggot Street
Paul ClerkinKeymasterThat “attic storey” is a new addition.
Paul ClerkinKeymasterI’m in complete agreement! Well said!
Paul ClerkinKeymasterFor those unfamiliar with Carton:
Paul ClerkinKeymasterHave you tried contacting the Irish Architectural Archive – http://www.archeire.com/iaa/ – they may have something or know if the designs actually still exist.
Paul ClerkinKeymasterGood suggestion… I’d be interested in getting involved in that – it could be promoted through here…..
Paul ClerkinKeymasterSpiral staircase? well thats the Aspro factory OK – look at the ilustration I posted further up – designed by Alan Hope (1909-1965) and winner of the RIAI Gold Medal for the period 1947-49.
Paul ClerkinKeymasterRegarding the libraries…..
There were four built to similar plans at
Phibsboro
Ringsend
Drumcondra
Inchicore
They were designed by Dublin Corporation ArchitectsPaul ClerkinKeymasterWell he seems appropriately off the wall for Flann O’Brien’s brother!
what was that monument?
Paul ClerkinKeymasterAre you thinking of the old Aspro factory?

PRESS RELEASE
on behalf of
DUBLIN CORPORATION
and
SHERBOROUGH SECURITIES Ltd.DEMOLITION OF ARCHER’S GARAGE, FENIAN STREET
Sherborough Securities Ltd. very much regrets the recent demolition of a List 1
building, Archer’s Garage, on Fenian Street. Noel O’Callaghan of Sherborough
Securities Ltd., requested a meeting with Dublin Corporation and following that
meeting, Sherborough Securities Ltd. have now signed a legal agreement with
Dublin Corporation unconditionally to re-instate the premises to its former
condition, with work to commence as soon as possible, but at the latest by 1st
September, 1999. They have also agreed that the re-instatement will be
completed within one year of commencement of works.Paul ClerkinKeymasterWell for me it’s as much the principle as the design: the building was listed therefore it should be safe.
IMHO the importance of the Archer’s Garage case is the fact that the lisiting stood for nothing. Where does the buck stop? At which building do we make a stand? Christchurch? Busaras? George’s Street Markets? Leinster House?
For the record, I always fancied the building as offices…..
Paul ClerkinKeymasterBy saying that he will rebuild, he’s hoping to avoid prosecution and resigning from Bord Failte….. we just have to keep up the pressure….. we need more people to send feedback to the corpo and Bord Failte…..
Paul ClerkinKeymasterBTW if anyone wants to write to the architects:
Anthony Reddy Associates
The Malt House
Grand Canal Quay
Dublin 2
IrelandPaul ClerkinKeymasterIt seems that Mr O’Callaghan is on the Board of Bord Failte…. I reckon his hotels should be picketed…… he also is a large donor to Fianna Fail…. so what odds no prosecution
Paul ClerkinKeymasterSo any other ideas for stepping us this campaign?
Paul ClerkinKeymasterFolks, register your disgust at
Paul ClerkinKeymasterI could set up an online form that would send an email to the City Manager and cc it to O’Callaghan Hotels to allow people to voice their opinions…… what do you think?
