      The Grand Canal crane collapse incident is the latest incident to impact on Zoe developments already chequered safety record.

      Given this companies flagrant diregard for safety procedures what should be done to keep zoe and other builders who have previously lost staff in line?

      The real pity is that zoe’s cranes didn’t fall on some of their earlier developments most notably the quays.

      60 evacuated following crane collapse

      “Around 60 people from the south inner city of Dublin are to spend the night in emergency accommodation, after a 200 foot crane collapsed in their neighbourhood.

      Residents of Emerald Cottages, Barrow Street and Grand Canal Street in Ringsend have been advised by Gardaí to leave their homes while the situation is being corrected.

      The Dublin Fire Brigade has said that two cranes are being brought to the area, one from Chapelizod in Dublin and the other from Monaghan, to help bring the broken crane down.”

      McNally Crane Hire are one of the biggest crane companies in Ireland – they supplied the crane to put up the Spire as Dubliners couldnt do it themselves.

      “Iarnród Éireann has said that no DART services will operate between Pearse and Sydney Parade stations tomorrow, because of safety concerns about the damaged crane.

      A curtailed DART service will operate between Sydney Parade and Bray/Greystones.

      Rosslare InterCity and Gorey Commuter services will be part or fully substituted by bus. Northside DART services will be subject to minor delays.”

      The company may have been based in Monaghan but they surely could have hired a crane ASAP from a geographically more convenient area.

      Given that it was a genuine emergency, If Irish Rail are to claim for lost passenger revenues it could come to a lot more than the rate for one sunday hire.

      I will be interested to see if Breannan represents the taxpayer in this situation, he can’t pin this one on Mary O’Rourke

      Best keep the jobs in Ireland ….else I suppose firms from Britain or the rest of Europe could have done the job too.

      Wacker & Macker INC., the local ‘Jacks of all trades’ could have done it too I suppose.

      Bizarre that Zoe weren’t mentioned at all on the news last night, or on the radio this morning.
      Regardless of their track record, it is to be expected that the contractors/developers be named, and a spokesperson contacted.
      Instead we had poor old Barry Kenny squirming as usual.

      For once it wasn’t his fault at all, it is about time that penalties for serious breaches of Health & Safety meet an adequate deterent.

      Being pragmatic it is obvious that the delay caused by bringing a crane from Monaghan led to the DART being shut down today. Had all the stops been pulled out to get the equipment ASAP the DART could have been running this morning.

      Breannan must pursue the crane or site owner for lost passenger revenue on this. It was too blatant to ignore.

      I live locally and went to look on Sunday. The high winds must have caused the crane to fail. It did not collapes as such, rather the gib split and the crane then became overbalanced so it was tottering at an angle. The rescue crane actually arrived at teh site while I was there in Sunday at about 3pm but the high winds prevented them using it.

      Very unusual failure. If the crane was lifting a load at the time you’d understand. But to fail like this when unloaded, regardless of the wind, is very worring.

      “Iarnród Éireann has said it expects disruption to DART services, caused by an unstable crane in the Ringsend area of Dublin, to continue for the rest of today and possibly into tomorrow morning.

      There are no trains running between Pearse Street and Lansdowne Road stations because of the crane, which is dangling close to a railway line.

      Work is continuing to try to make safe the building site.

      A spokesperson for Danninger Ltd, the developers of the site at Barrow Street, said they hoped to be able to take the crane down later today.

      Trains are scheduled to run every 20/30 minutes between Lansdowne Road and Greystones. Northside DART services are also subject to minor delays.

      About 60 people had to spend the night away from their homes at Barrow Street because of fears that the structure would collapse.”

      They still wern’t mentioned on RTE News last night, or on the radio this morning.
      IR must be furious, God knows they’ve a bad enough image problem as it is without outside factors contributing.

      Still can’t get over it breaking like that, what if it had happened in the city centre with a concrete load suspended from it? Imagine if it had happened to those two white cranes that built the Westin, or that huge one that blocked Dawson St for months?
      Or even if this crane had broken and dropped its load on a DART?
      This is a serious serious issue, esp considering Dublin is renouned for it’s many tower cranes.

      I was very wary walking by the Laughter Lounge site this morning…

      Mr Gormley said he wanted to know who would pick up the tab for the two day closure of the DART service in the area, the disruption and inconvenience to residents and commuters, and overtime for Gardaí, Fire Brigade and Health and Safety officers.

      Mr Gormley said residents were frustrated and annoyed that they may be facing a third night in a hotel, and wanted to know why they had to be evacuated when some businesses in the area were allowed to continue operating.”

      Well that’ll be one less political contribution if it gets onto the order of business.

      Residents demand report on crane incident

      “(11:36) Residents who were evacuated from their homes in Dublin when a crane partially collapsed have demanded that work on the building site is stopped until the cause of the incident is known.

      Around 100 residents from Ringsend met last night to discuss the issue.

      They say they want a full report from the Health and Safety Authority on what caused the arm of a 200ft crane to break off.

      Sixty people had to spend three nights in a hotel.

      Meanwhile, Iarnród Éireann says it lost around €150,000 because of disruption to DART and mainline services and will be sending a bill to the site developers.”

      Well done Barry Kenny it is good to see you pursuing the root cause in this case.

      I agree. Rare event for me to praise Barry Kenny (my fellow Maynooth resident, with whom I’ve had a number of spats) but on this occasion, Irish Rail performed admirably, given the constraints that Danninger Ltd in effect imposed on them.

      Safety inquiry ordered into Ringsend site cranes

      “The Health and Safety Authority has ordered a safety assessment of all cranes on a Dublin building site after last week’s partial collapse of a 200-foot crane at the site close to train tracks at Ringsend in Dublin.

      A major section of the crane snapped off at a Dallinger Ltd construction site at the old Gasworks site last Sunday, and 70 residents had to be evacuated from their homes in the area.

      According to reports this morning, the Health and Safety Authority has forbidden Danninger from using cranes to transport material over the roofs of houses or gardens in the area.

      Train and DART services were severely disrupted after the crane collapse, and Iarnród Éireann said late last week it would bill Danniger for the loss of more than €150,000 in ticket revenue”
