A Dublin hotelier and property developer, Mr Noel O’Callaghan, is seeking planning permission to erect a five-storey, L-shaped office block around Archer’s garage on Fenian Street.
The late-1940s garage, occupied until recently by EWL Electric, was demolished illegally over the June bank holiday weekend despite being listed for preservation. It is to be faithfully reconstructed at Dublin Corporation’s insistence.
The planning application for the office building is being treated separately from a submission by Mr O’Callaghan’s architects, Anthony Reddy Associates, of plans to reconstruct the former List 1 garage.

All is revealed – There can be no doubt the plans for the office would look pretty different if he had gotten away with his vandalism.

All the bright blue skies in the world wouldn’t make that building appealing in any way. I think that all developers should be forced to display such images with a rather more realistic ‘cold gray’ coloured sky.
Hate to say it but nothing of the mock Archers adds to the building.
If anyone wants to get a feel for the scale of this development then they should stand in Pearse Square and look to the North West.
Yes than lump(The Old ESB stores Erne Street Lower) with the grey steel on top is the same height as the L shaped blocked proposed.This proposal is not great architecture. It is probably not even good architecture. What this whole sorry tale mirrors -including illegal demolition, flaunting of planning laws and now the po-faced contrition of this scheme- is a good built representation of the value systems of “the Celtic Tiger” or “mainstream contemporary Irish society”, as I prefer to call it. What do I mean?… The nod and wink culture that we are so good at.
Wouldn’t it all be so much easier and less painful if we just obeyed our own laws. They’re there for OUR good!!

Archers garage has crashed into Trinity college Residential block on Pearse Street, taking bits of Ulsterbank on Georges quay with it.
What a crock, but what else would people suggest for the site, its no better or worse than any other recent piece of office “Architecture”.

This blasphemy is yet another example of a complete lack of inventiveness and practicality and obviously sniffing the cash rather than considering a building that breathes and involves it’s people and environment!!…I am now completely fed up with this country because it has become so complacent….how did the marvellous buildings ever come to be if this was in our blood???Wher has the irish reputation for imagination gone?
I’ve just thought of something, If Archers Garage has to be reconstructed before September 2000, surely work would have to start ASAP to ensure that the building is completed on time. Therefore we have no comeback against this crock being built behind it..ie If this block isn’t built I’m sure O’Callaghan will use the reconstruction of Archers to force the proposed block through the planning system. It will be seen by the planning office as a sop to conservationists that Archers is being rebuilt but is there really such a need to rub salt in the wound by build such unimaginative architectural dross!

Councillors are worried that the ‘blocky’ office building will take away from the original garages and over-shadow surrounding residential homes‘I would have hoped that the days of the bland office blocks would have passed’ said Cllr Ciaran Cuffe.
Cllr Frances Fitzgerakd (FG) added that the Corporation should not lower its standards for the building whish was being rapped [sic] around the restored garage.
‘I have that we are almost being asked to be grateful that the grage is being reinstated and we should not’ she said.
“Has the guy who knocked the place down been fired off the board of Bord Failte yet? Any chance of a civil prosecution?
Observation based on personal experience: until people feel some sort of pain for breaking the law, they will not change (hand caught in cookie jar, etc.). Sorry for being a spoil sport, but that’s the way we old humans operate, you know. Believe me, I’m no different.
