      Sio its goodbye to that pinacle of bad taste- the Lenehans store on Talbot St. They have begun clearing it today pending demolition. I must admit I never noticed that planning notice so I am not sure what’s planned.

      Also down in this area is the new Steelworks apartment block on Foleys St which looks quite good…. at least from the picture! No more movement on the Music Centre and pedestrain link between Talbot and Foley though…. the developers (Redstarz) seem to be amending their plans.

      Anybody remember when the fron of Lenihans collapsed in the late 70s?

      As far as I recall a few people were killed…

      Passed it today smirking broadly – I’ve always tried to think what it looks like – I think a big yellow lunchbox is the closest one can get.

      I can’t think of any other building in the city where anything, anything at all, would be better than the one standing.
      Even Hawkins House doesn’t come close –
      well ok maybe thats going a bit too far…

      I thought it was modelled on one of the old orange CIE double deckers from the 70s!

      aknowledging the fact that the building was in reality a pile of cheap plastic, i quite liked it after i romaticised it into being a peice of 70s archigram in dublin. i will miss being deluded into happiness everytime i walk down that filthy street……

      I have (completely irrational) fond memories of this, as probably the first building I ever actually noticed as a kid. I presumed a bus had crashed into it and had just been left there and incorporated into the building.
      Little did I know I’d still be looking at the fecking thing 25-odd years later!

      This is O’ Cll St’s partner in crime in terms of filth, every bin was overflowing with rubbish today, as were the pavements.

      Well if you havn’t said your goodbyes its too late now I’m afraid – the 70s bus remains have already come down, exposing the building in all it’s breeze-blocked glory – the cladding being carted off to be recycled into milk bottles.

      Sustainable redevelopment?

      DCC have also got rid of some of those ridiculous traffic islands on Talbot St. No longer will buses and cars have to negotiate the abstacle course these created. I know it was all about slowing and managing traffic but it just failed miserably…it was daft. Surely much better to ban cars altogether. Unfortunately they have taken away some of the few trees on the street …. no worries though, they wil put up plenty of galvanised steel poles to compensate
