On a genuinely positive note, the recently completed perimeter paving around the Green looks spectacular, a credit to the OPW. The best of materials and the best of workmanship pays off wonderfully, it has breathed new life into the area. The laying of a decent road surface and the reinstatement of the silver Victorian lamp standards on the opposite sides would finish it off nicely. (I won’t mention the lantern-head issue again)

Yeah, it really looks excellent, and the round corner near Baggot Street looks just fantastic, though I can’t figure out what the did with it. I think they lowered the statue plynth (?) and added lights and paving, but it just seems to really catch my eye every time I walk by.
I’d go as far as saying that it looks “cool”.

yeah passed the wolfe tone monument tonight, really looks great after its makeover, especially with the flood lights …
the paving really looks great too, first class workmanship whoever they contracted it out to, hope they give o’connell street the same treatment … -

Ditto, exept for the lighting – a bit harsh on Wolfie.
He’s got two dark dopplegangers on either side! -

Its such a pleasant place to walk now, esp in contrast with the congested pavements across the road, esp around the Grafton Street corner. There is no excuse now for the paving not to be maintained, it should all be pressure washed 2-3 times a year, hardly much to ask. Maintenance of public spaces is the millstone around Dublin’s neck, and needs to be addressed.

The replacement of the old lights with Halogen lights, new bright stone pavements and the new trees has made a huge difference – the place feels very cosmopolitan and reminds me of continental european cities

The white gravel around the new trees is esp elegant. Overall, I think it looks so good because it dosn’t feel like Dublin! (the original lantern heads could have been retained, with modern halogen bulbs installed)

I think Stephens Green is looking smashing. It will be interesting to see what the west side looks like when the Luas lines have been laid. The outer perimeter is the Councils responsibility so I hope they make an effort and match the OPWs good work

Speaking of paving – does anyone else feel that the red brick and faux-victorian lights in Grafton Street looks tired given how well the green now looks?

Grafton Street doesn’t look half bad considering it’s well over ten years ago that it was done up. But maybe it’s time to start thinging of a new look for the street. I don’t expect it will follow the route Henry Street took…

Yeah, all that red paving is a bit naff, very 80s, although it does make it the only Dublin street with some warmth & character. The mock Victorian lanterns are also dated, but only because they are poor replicas, the columns themselves are original though, made in the Hammond Lane foundry in approx 1870. Decent replicas should be installed, as they are in character with Ireland’s finest and most intact Victorian street.
I should’nt be saying that I noticed this, the bulbs inside them are actually standard crappy 20w domestic energy saving bulbs! And we wonder why Dublin is so gloomy at night?!!!
