ParticipantPassing by the hospital the other day I noticed that the ugly tower is now been demolished. I know that the hospital is planning some new buildings for the site but does anybody know what exactly is going on??

ParticipantMy understanding is that the Nurses Home (tower)is gutted, but still standing and is to be demolished sometime soon. Why an admittedly ugly, but apparently serviceable building which would do well for student accomodation is to be demolished is beyond me.
Where do student nurses live in Dublin now?

ParticipantStudent nurses haven’t been living in it for some years now AFAIK.
The whole Vincent’s complex is wearing quite badly. Didn’t part of it get a RIAI Gold Medal in the 1950s

ParticipantNo, that was the Out-Patients’ Dept at St Luke’s, Rathgar by T(homas) P Kennedy, winner for the period 1950-1952.

ParticipantAnyone see the footage of the building’s “demolition” — some egg on the UK company’s faces after that.
It must have been very solidly built to be still standing.

ParticipantIt was sickening the way the crowd cheered when the explosives went off. Just like an an old-fashioned public execution.

KeymasterHow would you expect them to act? The public would hardly have had any great affection for it.

ParticipantAlthough it was what could be described as ugly in appearance it could have had an auld lick of bright paint in it’s time to cheer it up. There are too many buildings of this kind with a dirty weathered concrete appearance which the public in turn understandably find unappealing.
….what an odd sight too it was to see here, a building of somewhat substance and height subcombing to the demolishionists explosives. Roll on Ballymun …although that will be somewhat sad too. ‘Failed optimism!’

ParticipantBelieve me a lick of paint would not have helped that place. Brown pebbledash (even the words make me shudder). They really needed to demolish most of that place it was bloody awful. Anybody know what the plans for the new place are like?
I think I heard that the frontage was going to overlook the Merrion Road. Sounds interesting.
