The Silver Swan hotel in the centre of Sligo, over looking the bay is to be demolished and replaced with a new 10 floor hotel. Along with the proposed 15 floor hotel, adjecent 10 floor office building and retail park in Carraroe, things are looking up for Sligo, excuse the pung.

You’ve not seen the Silver Swan proposal then?

Aland you beat me to the punch. There is a tendancy to believe any development is better than none regardless of the content.

The thing about the Silver Swan, shadow is that it is in an outstanding location for a hotel, a building that could have become a marker for the future development of the town.
Treated with some sensitivity it could have been outstanding
What an opportunity.

But is it the same proposal as can be seen on the billboards?, i was hoping i could believe it was just an initial idea of the project, it certainly isn’t 15 storeys. Or is there a new proposal, haven’t been to sligo in a while.

The I5 Storey building is the new hotel on the Dublin Road, which is actually an interesting design but in a position of really no consequence as far as it’s contribution to the quality of the town
The Silver Swan though is right on the knuckle of the Garavogue river as it passes through the centre of the town and received planning for a mock post modern, pseudo vernacular type thingmy but has since changed owners.
It was sold with planning consent
As far as I understand it the new developers want to add to it but I hav’nt seen their proposals. In truth……..don’t really want to either, just rub salt in the fucking wounds.

Two articles from the sligo champion, the silver swan hotel is thankfully a 1000 miles from the proposed plans
http://www.unison.ie/sligo_champion/stories.php3?ca=38&si=1289179&issue_id=11703 . also God help me for suggesting this but the decision to take 3 storeys off the building behind the hotel is probably justified. Also the two “hi-rise” buildings on the new approach road

The first article is very confusing. Is the apartment tower thirteen or ten storeys?

Yeah, bringing it down from 13 to 10 is fine. The environment of that location doesn’t need to be changed too much more dramatically than it’s already going to.
As far as the design goes for this new Silver Swan proposal, I think it looks good. The renderings are awfully small, but it looks neat. Good job, Sligo.

I have seen the plans actually, i am working with the guy who owns the site and who is developing it. I have seen all the plans and I think it is a very nicely designed development. It will incorporate a new pedestrian bridge across the river and a 13 floor residental tower.

So is it 13 or 10? The article seems to indicate that the planning commision made them change it to 10.
Also, can you update us on when it begins construction?

That picture on the bottom isn’t of the Silver Swan, its the Queen Maeve Hotel (15) and the 10 storey office block.
