So iv been looking through all these threads on new developments and for a while it was all looking good, but now it seems everything has been cancelled and i’m sitting here pissed off (as i’m sure alot of you are) and i’m trying really hard not to make this into a rant!!

So i propose this thread where you can post pics of existing buildings, buildings under construction or well anything really to show off our beautiful capital!!:D

And yes this is really is just a ploy to cheer me up 🙂

I can’t really think of anything,

. . . . but the coloured panels on this apartment block on Military Road, part of the HSQ development, are bordering on cheerful! (by either Tony Reddy, or more likely MV Cullinan, both name plates are on the hoarding).

That and two of my favourites from a few years ago. The Film Centre (Sycamore St. building), by O’D+T in their good period, and the curved apartment block on the liffey opposite Heuston, which never seemed to get the recognition it deserved (don’t know who architects were)

      I found something else I like;

I don’t know anything about this or who the architects were, so if anyone can fill in the blanks that would be good.

The building is no. 146 Parnel Street, near the corner with North Great Georges Street, and it’s one of the group of mid Georgians that close the vista down Marlborough Street. The building was in rag order for as long as I can remember and the pedimented door surround was so weathered that bits of it had crumbled away. I can’t remember the shopfront, but is was something low grade and the whole ensemble was bordering on derelict.

In the last year, or so, it’s been turned into this ‘Budget Hostel’ and assuming that it’s not an actual flea-pit on the inside, somebody deserves considerable credit for the manner of the renovation, the tasteful ground floor treatment and for that shopfront.

I don’t normally like polished stone, or 3-D lettering, but here, in contrast to the original rich red brickwork and the creamy stonework of the restored doorway, the black, almost negative, shopfront and the bold stainless steel lettering work perfectly, IMO. It looks a lot classier than some of the budget hostel I stayed in, back in the day.

The restrained black metal projecting sign adds just the right touch that tells you that these guys understand the limits and are prepared to work within them. Either that or the planners were on the ball.

The architects were Anthony Reddy Associates. They also did the Chocolate Factory, the new Eircom building, the Fatima mansions redevelopment and the Radisson hotel on Golden Lane. The apartments work well from the inside too.

I lived in the end bar one on the top floor for a year – pretty nice – great view of the curve of the river….

I thought this thread was about beautiful buildings, and then we get a series of posts about the most banal kind of commercial shit imaginable. Do we have no standards?

      Seems that way.

And WOW, this thread died a horrible, horrible death.

It only died because spoil_sport poured cold water on it, you posted an out of date (by two years) image of HSQ from the RHK gardens, and everyone else started to lose the will to live!

“It only died because spoil_sport poured cold water on it”

      I do my best…

When I thought of buildings to that do service to “our capital” I was thinking more along the lines of O’D+T: Ranelagh School, East Wall Community Centre, Grafton: Merrion Row, deBlacam+Meagher: Wooden Building, McCulloughMulvin: Ussher Library, etc, etc, etc… “The Bunkhouse” posted above by gunter was a step in the right direction… you know, buildings that actully exhibit some degree of thoughtfulness and craft, instead of this soul-less, lowest common denominator Anthony Reddy shite.

Got to agree… Reddys wouldn’t be my first choice if I was trying to illustrate architectural quality or beauty. Closer to last I’m afraid! The entire Heuston Gate development including the eircom block is an absolute horror to my eyes, bland, soulless, flashy but insubstantial dross crammed onto the site unceremoniously… I’ll stop, it’s supposed to be a positive thread!!! lets see if I can find some nice images!!
