KeymasterI was in Ryan’s yesterday evening and they’ve cut the bar. For those who dont know, it was a magnificent horsehoe bar, but they crudly cut the pannelling so they cuould push the counter back 3 feet to make more space…
another fine victorian interior ruined… was it not listed?

ParticipantThis pub is constantly being subjected to a barrage of misguided builders terrorism. I thought it was a listed structure……
where’s the ‘do-gooder’ architectural watchdogs in this case…….or have they their heads too far up their arses wrapped up in their own little personal agendas. -

KeymasterThe mad thing is that they are cutting their own throats turning it into a ubiquitous cafe bar. Guinness obviously thought enough of the place to feature it in an ad recently (and it was in Bachelors Walk)… you can clearly see “ryans” backwards in the glass panels in the ad and then they removed them….
If they are trying to attract in more punters, my tip would be to turn on the fecking heat… it has to be the coldest pub in Dublin….. I reckon they’re looking at Nancy Hands up the street which is very popular but a well run comfortable pub, and thinking they can compete at the expense of their LISTED INTERIOR…. but they’re two different sorts of bars…. but by destroying the ambiance, they don’t have anything to attract you in…..
At this rate, they should be summarily stripped of any mentions in tourist guides…

Back up this morning when I passed. Stuck my head in to look, havent been revarnished or cleaned in any way. Wonder did they get a negative reaction and decide to put them back in.

KeymasterRyan’s of Parkgate St sells for good price after auction
RYAN’S of Parkgate St, one of northside Dublin’s best known licensed premises, has been sold after auction by Morrisseys.
The property was withdrawn at €1.5m and sold after for an undisclosed “much higher” figure. The pre-auction price guideline was €2m, suggesting that the consideration was around this level.
Just beside the entrance to the Phoenix Park, Ryan’s is one of the few remaining examples of authentic Victorian style pub decor in the city. The entire ground floor has, indeed, been listed for preservation, indicating its architectural importance. The celebrated hostelry was established in early 19th century and has become a legendary part of Irish pub lore in the intervening years.
much good it did it

ParticipantNancy Hands kills this place in terms of trade at all times of the day – so I guess they were trying stuff out to compete.
It’s probably one of the worst ventilated pubs in Ireland and has really thick acrid air about it at times (it’s the ciggies dontcha know) – surely this can’t be good for a listed interior???

KeymasterThe king is dead. Long live the king! Returned to Ryan’s of Parkgate Street last night. Some of you may remember how pissed off I was when the previous owners butchered the bar. Indeed my howls of indignation were in The Sunday Times. Anyway it has been bought by Nancy Hands up the street, a bar we like, as much for its friendly manager as for the beer.
And they’re restored Ryans, the bar has been lengthened again to reincorporate the space for the staff to walk around the centre island. Everything has got a lick of paint and varnish. Horrible crt televisions removed and a slim flat panel mounted on the wall. The furniture in the snugs has been reupholstered and a new long space behind the bar at the back wall is great for having a pint in.

ParticipantYeah, I forgot to post about that. I’m not sure about the thing at the back; it destroys the righthand snug and removes access to the bar from the lefthand one. Still, it’s a much better way to get extra space than damaging the bar. Good to have my local back as well.
The first night was interesting, they had a jazz band outside and horse drawn carriages and the like. I had to run off so I didn’t get a chance to look inside.
Any idea when the restaurant is reopening?
