I am in one of my nerdy knickers moods again today and reading planning notices. An interesting on is that The Olympia Theatre have applied to renovate and refurbish the theatre including restoaration of the facade including that canopy and the sashes (you’ll be happy Graham) and internal changes to teh bars and wcs. They have also applied for permission to buding a new 5 story building to the rear on a currently derelict site (it must be the last in the area). Very welcome I say following fresh on the heels of the Gate and Gaiety Theatres.
Anything more about the poor auld Abbey? In fact its got me thinking about a lot of our entertainment venues in the city. The UCG complex is being renovated on Parnell St. However the Savoy and Screen cinemas remain in some horrible 70s nightmare. I was in the Screen the other night…. great auditorium but awful sound and crap seating. Am I right in thinking it is owned by the same family or company as the Savoy. How on earth the Savoy has traded on its size and location alone for so long is amazing. Very little imagination or effort has gone into amking it more of an experience going t the movies here. I am sure we have said the same on a previous thread.

Oh I love the Screen and Savoy the way they are. They have great character (is that just an age thing?) Anyway they are some of the things I miss about Dublin since I moved here to London. I know the outsides could do with a touch up on both, but I think if they go at the inside we will end up with another boring UGC style complex.

Its extraordinary that the Savoy once held a whopping 3000 people – slap bang in the city centre, before it was subdivided in the 60s.
I passed the Olympia only the other day and was just thinking that it badly needed restoration – some of the ironwork is in poor condition and the stuccowork heavily over-painted.
Many of the signs outside are cheap and clutter up the facade.
Above street level its a bit grotty too.Still, a charmingly inoffensive building – so much more typical of the city’s previous music halls and theatres than say – the likes of the Gaiety.
