So in the commercial supplement in today’s Times there was an article about a Benson and Forsythe development on Molesworth street – behind two Georgians and invisible from the street because they are putting the plant in the basement – cool, and a nice looking roof terrace. Anyway, as well as reminding us that the Millennium Wing of the NGI has a roof terrace, still awaiting the “finger building” to provide access I guess, it said that Henegan and Ping had been commissioned to design a new wing to the gallery. Does anyone know anything about this? Where, surely the building is currently landlocked?

Well their schemes in Cairo and at the Giant’s Causeway were both underground (and the Carlisle pier has been effectively buried ;)) so maybe there’s a clue in that? 🙂
Nothing at this link yet: http://hparc.com/projects.html

Well it is confirmed, without details on their news page:
where you also learn they have been commisioned to do a street and landscape design for the area in front of the customs house.

I’m mystified, given the reality of the Naas building

It’s unlikely to be any images of the NGI proposal before the end of 2007 as the project is only starting out – scope has yet to be determined etc
as regards a site – how about that small Gov Dept building on Clare Street?

Hope it’s better than the last new wing of the gallery. Whatever its architectural merits, it doesn’t work as a gallery space…

Refusal came back on that quite promtly:

Oh well, Benson & Forsyth can always commiserate with their fellow countryman, aland, who also enjoyed an Irish refusal for too much development next to PS 😉

For such a big building they dont seem to have gained much gallery space. Also I find the transition between the old building and the new building somewhat awqard

Yes, but I don’t believe the brief specified much more gallery space, I see the millenium wing a s device for drawing more of the general public into the gallery and in that sense it works quite well. You are led directly up the wide stairway and into the old gallery in what amounts to a straight line.
The other bits of the programme: cafe, shop, etc are hugely successfull and generate a lot of revenue for the gallery as well as giving it a greater presence within the cityscape by encouraging passing visitors to come in.

The Molesworth Street refusal has been appealed by the applicant – http://www.pleanala.ie/casenum/224219.htm

That appeal was withdrawn and fresh application is now in. They’re still going for a total of 6 storeys behind the Georgian houses, but seem to have sunk it down a bit to be less noticeable.

Is a veil still drawn over the real progeny of the two houses?
