The RIAI (Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland), 8 Merrion Square, Dublin 2 (Tel: 353 1 6761703) in association with Navan Urban District Council are hosting a competition for the design of a twon square for Navan to mark the Millenium. The budget for the project will be in the region of 600,000 IR£.

The competition is open to architects, landscape architects, planners, urban designers and artists in the EU. The promoters are seeking designers who will be responsible for the design and who can secure the realisation of that design through the mechanism of a conventional building contract. The assessors would consider a collaborative approach to be the most appropriate for this project.

A prize fund of 10,000 IR£ will be awarded at the discretion of the Jury and competitors are required to submit one A1 size drawn sheet.

It is envisaged that the competition will conclude in June in order for completion of the project in December 1999.

      The Jury:
      Joe Crockett, Assistant County Manager
      Jim Holloway, Town Chairman
      Gerry Mitchell, MRIAI, Landscape Architect
David O’Connor, MRIAI, Senior Architect, Fingal County Council
      Oliver Perkins, County Engineer,
      RIAI Nominee

In the spirt of conservation and reuse I thought I would revive this thread. Has the project mentioned come in to being or is part of a long list of ‘would have been nice but we don’t have the money’ ?. I was in Navan in 2001 and did’nt see any thing that sounds like the brief proposed. The only thing I can recall is that at the back of the RIAI awards in 2000 it listed the runner ups. Can any one enlighten me, if the project has been finished is ther any photos.

I appears that a sculpture of a bull was an integral part of the winning design, no business in the ‘square’ wanted the bulls rear end pointing at them so in the interest of local democracy the town councillors refused to adopt the scheme. 😮
