I think that Dublin really needs a landmark that would act as an icon of the city-only one is necessary, but more are welcome.
London has the Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben etc. Paris has the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe etc. I think the National Conference Centre should be built, but without all the mess o’ crap planned to surround it. I also think that the Government should rebuild Michael Scott’s 1939 pavilion at the New York exhibition, as this was definitely of high value. Rebuilding modern monuments should not be in conflict with principles against pastiche. For instance, take the Barcelona Pavilion designed by Mies van der Rohe, which was demolished a year after it was built in the 1920’s, and rebuilt decades later with the architect’s blessing. I also think the Government should give more important commissions like Busáras, or the JFK Concert Hall (which was never built). I think the Spike for O’Connell Street is good, like a Sun Dial, but its height should be restricted, not because the city is generally low-rise, but because it would just look wrong-lanky
