100 jobs are in the pipeline for Monasterevin after Kildare County Council gave the go-ahead for Ireland’s first motorway service station on the N7.The development, which includes a hotel, truck stop and food outlets, will be styled on the motorway facilities in Europe and will provide 100 jobs when completed and a further 100 jobs during construction.
It is the first major employment in the area for 50 years.

Councillors in Kildare were unanimous in their vote for rezoning which went to material contraventions]
This is one I will be keeping a close eye on and I would say that the number of planning submissions made will prove a more accurate measure of ‘local delight’ than a single sound bit or two.

Thats great news!
It will be interesting to have a motorway service station for the first time in Ireland. 🙂
But in my opinion i’d only like to see one on each of the main inter-urban routes .
As Ireland is still a small country and these stations could further suck the life out the bypassed towns and villages. And I really feel the monasterevin is an arsed location for the sevice station considering its only 40 mins drive to Dublin, I believe this is part of the monopoly of the Dublin area or some local developer
. Its pointless stopping or having it hereThe whole idea of it is to service long distance traffic that need to stop on a half way point, between to major centres of population,in my mind.
They should have it soutwest of Portlaois near the new toll collection area.

Spot on Dave its called locational justification; to my mind any point in Co Kildare is too close to Dublin unless there are too be multiple motorway services all over our Dual Carriageway network.
Potlaoise would have a made a better location; there are significant environmental concerns of a location around Monaterevan due to its proximity to the hydrology feeding both the Barrow SAC catchment and the Pollardstown Fen SAC catchment.

How many services do we want?

You are all presuming that Dublin is the point of departure. Having travelled on far too many occasions between Belfast and Cork, a service station near Dublin/Kildare sounds just about right.
