indo’s better dublin

never pay any attention to that crap section of the indo, don’t think i’ve ever seen any comment on anything to do with what’s being built in the city good or otherwise …which surely deserves at least a few inches in a section that is supposed to be devoted to the city….

By Agencies they mean the Traffic Department, Parking Agencies, Gardai, Dublin Bus, Road Repair people, etc, etc, etc…

It was indeed a strange piece, there is a huge disconnect between stated wishes and likely reality in Dublin. Particularly relevant if you were experiencing a 1hr / 2 mile bus journey home at the same time, due to 1. traffic and 2 poor setting of traffic lights and 3 arbitrary road engineering to ensure no lane runs anywhere for very long.

I keep thinking that a small army of people with walkie talkies at every single junction would actually work better than the current system. There’s no pint in changing the light if no-one’s getting anywhere, and you could just talk to the guy at the next junction and see what’s going on…

Better enforcement of the rules would make more sense. Junctions get blocked because twats drive into yellow boxes – if they crucified these guys things would move better. Also deliveries – especially draymen delivering beer – this shoul be carried out between 4 and 7 am not during the day, apologies for anybody who misses out on sleep but tough. Finally – roadworks the tender should be won by whoever can complete the task as quicky and with as little disruption as possible, not just who can do the job cheapest.

I remember that…….the buses were to be able to influence the colour of the lights to their advantage.

I think the buses can change the traffic lights. At certain junctions, there are sensors attached to the poles.

Tell us about it – now a resident in Drogheda, place is a bloody death trap, have to wait until close to the start of the game to go buy the sunday newspaper, sooner the bypass opens the better!!!

Actually, if the Indo wanted a better Dublin they could start by redeveloping their own, now defunct, printing buildings on (1) Abbey Street Next to Chapters (look for the place with the huge shutters and youv’e found it) and Princes Street North (down by the GPO Arcade) that could be made into a very pleasant area

They have sold those buildings.

Have they! I wonder what the plans are for them…

I have been wondering alot how Abbey Street will develop once the Luas is in place and the street doesnt look like a warzone. I suppose there is limited scope for shopping. Must of the buildings are solid enough stock although many are in need of repair.

I wonder if its being addressed as part of the O’Connell Street plan.

What does everyone else think of what this area needs to develop to its full potential? Is there room for another shopping area in addition to Henry St, the Ilac and Jervis centres. Business is all moving to the Docklands. Residential? Cultural – isnt that Temple Bars label?

I think that the exit to the Multi story Carpark beside Arnotts has left an unfortunate gaping hole in the street scape. Dangerous too for pedestrians, been nearly mown down a couple of times myself. Much more discrete exit for Jervis St Shopping centre carpark although I suppose Arnotts also have the goods entrance included aswell!

the alignment of middle abbey street is all over the place, plus there’s a lot of crap on the southside of the street … guess the luas can only help though .

As regards Arnotts Car Park exit I have to agree – who would have thought the Adephi Cinema lobby could be so menacing.

It looks dreadful though – a gaping hole in the facade, how they got away with it I dont know – and as was previously mentioned its a real menace to pedestrians – so kind of control/barrier is needed there
