I was just wondering if anyone had seen this recently rediscovered gem. The images of Dublin and Howth in the late 1950s are heart wrenchingly nostalgic and I can’t help thinking what a hit with the tourists the Howth tram might have been had it survived another few years. San Francisco’s cable car system comes to mind.

That’s wonderful, thank you so much! My dad was on the last run of the tram. A predictable tragedy that we lost it. As a regular circumnavigator of the peninsula, I find it very interesting to see how much and how little has changed.

I saw that on television less than 2 months ago.
I think it may have been TG4 that were showing it.
They had a series showing independent films made around this time.
I saw the Howth Tram film and caught the last 20 mins of a film about a small fishing village, not sure where it was set though.
      Very interesting viewing.

Is the line still traceable? Or has it been illegally built-on by Howth toffs who would demand thousands in ‘compensation’ if it were restored?

I’ve no idea. It’d be worth checking out though. But I don’t think it’d be viable to rebuild this unless it was done by some private group of enthusiasts, though it would have been a treat had it survived.

The entire tramline from the Summit down to the DART station is still there. It’s a great stony path through a little bit of wilderness and then runs a little dodgily behind some estates. On the southside of the hill, the tram ran along the road for the most part. The space it ran along has been colonised by pavement in a few places. You could re-instate the line without much pain, though.

I’ll get some tramline pics soon šŸ™‚

fergalr: Thanks for that; that’s very good news. The little film was nostalgia personified, the relaxed honey tones of Cyril Cusack and all. Clearly, times have changed, but as a tourist attraction this would be a clear winner. The corollary is, of course, that any one who does ‘acquire’ any of the solum should be jumped on.

Fond of the fags weren’t they? Splendid little fillum all in all. Reminded me of the little blue tram up to the funicular to Tibidabo in Barcelona. Lovely tourist trip.
