I’m not sure if the OCS thread is the best place for this…

Both Ulster Bank and the extension to the Gate Theatre have both had their hoarding and scaffolding removed in the last few days. Ulster Bank looks fantastic, I’m looking forward to seeing what the third section (on the right) looks like when it’s unveiled. The stonework is amazing and (my personal sticking point) the lighting is well done and very discrete, nothing like Brown Thomas.

I’m less impressed with the Gate (apologies for the awful photos) They’re kept the old doorway which looks good but I think the shape and colour conflicts with the original building and, though you can’t see it from the photos, the extension protrudes by several feet so it feels disjointed and tacked on instead of blending in.

It’s good to see some improvements around the area though, especially with the north-west side getting quieter by the day now that Charterland have bought up those units.

I have been meaning to post a picture almost exactly like this myself: I am a bit annoyed by the Gate extension, the blank elevation is a mistake, some sort of detailing to carry the rhythm of the original building would have made it so much better.

      🙂

Agreed about the Gate. It doesn’t work because it neither continues the style/vague idiom of the existing entrance nor does it make itself sufficiently different to act as a readable contrast. It’s just a bland monolith of sameyness that consumes the archway and says nothing new. How Michael Colgan of all people is ‘delighted’ with this work by (shock!) Scott Tallon Walker is beyond me.

Agreed markpb regarding parts of the Ulster Bank: some of the stonework is well executed. But alas the central section’s chanelling is weak and and lacking in the robustness that is needed to carry the upper floors. I think photos will be best posted once it’s all complete 🙂

Faux column I didn’t want, but something surely.
