Over the past two years Dublin Civic Trust has been developing a series of policy documents intended to generate debate and action to revitalise and improve the city centre and key historic streets to realise our vision of Dublin as a beautiful and vibrant capital city. These policies build on the 20 years of research and advocacy which the Trust has undertaken to recognise and protect the architectural heritage of our city.
The policy documents are an opportunity to engage key stakeholders such as Dublin City Council, the city’s business community and the citizens of Dublin to work towards a city that realises its full potential as a place to live, work in and enjoy.
‘Defining Dublin’s Historic Core: Realising the Potential of the City Centre and its Georgian Squares for Citizens, Business and Visitors’ is the basis of these studies and was prepared in 2010 as a joint submission with Dublin City Business Association to the new City Development Plan. The report provides an analysis of the city centre, its attributes and distinctive qualities, the issues it faces in realising its full potential and the changes and measures needed to effect improvement.
Subsequent studies have looked at key secondary streets in the city; Capel Street & The City Markets with its potential to develop as a lively food quarter for the city, Parnell Street East with its vibrant Asian population and its strategic location at the heart of the much neglected North Georgian Core, and historic Thomas Street in The Liberties, one of the city’s oldest thoroughfares winding through the medieval city.
Dublin Civic Trust has now brought these Urban Visions together in an online library to increase public knowledge and understanding of the fantastic resource that is the built heritage of our city.
