      Im curious…
      I know other countries do…
Do you think architects/techs are undercutting each other?
Is this good for the industry?
Do you think practices may perform switcharoos and reverse outsourcing…

Interesting you mention this….I heard of one architects practice recently letting go, contrary to what you might expect, it’s older and longest serving architects (some with 30 years service) in a bid to cut costs! I didn’t hear who was left, but I would expect they are probably/possibly on lower rates of pay and conditions.

A bit off the topic but I can’t imagine how it would feel to work for a practice for 30 years and to be made redundant especially given the practice has not closed….wouldn’t do much for your self esteem!

Fortunatly, Ireland is a free country, and people are free to charge as much or as little as they want.

If that’s what it took to compete, then yes.

To ‘compete’ with whom – yourself?

Other people out for the same job.

Just think about it: if you drive down wages, you end up depriving youself, even if you’re ‘successful’ in getting the job. In the end, you can’t compete with 3rd (or 2nd) world wages and you’ll merely facilitate your employer in continuing to run two Jags, or whatever.

Well, at the end of the day, I’d rather have a low paid job, than no job at all.
Of course, ideally, I’d rather compete based on ability than cost.

I remember the days when the year out student worked for free. 😮

We are in interesting economic times and the longer the current recession (sorry, downturn) goes on, the more we will need to revise our economic landscape to a more social-democratic model. With GB in charge, that would be like asking David Cameron to recommend the closure of all public schools in the common interest. I’d never want to see anyone out of a job, but we are going to have to learn to ask the questions in a different way.
