An exhibition entitled ‘Decorating the Georgian Interior: an exhibition of selected drawings from the National Library’s Stapleton Collection’ has just opened in the Irish Architectural Archive on Merrion Square. It might be of interest to a few Archiseek users:

Yep – most of Stapleton’s drawings on display are mind-numbingly detailed. In this digital age, it’s hard to imagine that these were all painstakingly sketched and coloured by hand as you see them on the original paper, and not composed on a large scale and reproduced on smaller pages as most plans are today.

How he could even see what he was sketching, whatever of the exqusite quality of the work, is a fascination in itself.
It’s lovely how close you can get to them on display too, and how the light catches on the texture of the thick 18th century laid paper.

Nice to see some of his house plans too.
