For a time there it seemed that this building was going to be converted to offices, indeed there is a planning notice on it for offices, yet this morning I spy with my little eye a sign

      “1,2,3 Bedroom Apartments to Let
      Duplexes and Townhouses”

About time too – haven’t they been vacent for about 2 years? Also the building will probably look a lot beeter once it is occupied!

i had heard that the building was unoccupied because they had added on an extra storey during the construction thus voiding the planning permission, presumably hoping nobody would notice.

      Has anyone else heard this?

Isn’t it a Zoe development? And if so, it must be their best. Not saying it’s brilliant, but it’s not bad. It’s amazing though how quickly a building can fall into disrepair when it’s not in use. It looks shabby already and they’ll need to spruce it up good and proper before they open it.

As a PS, does anyone know where I could find a model or drawing of the new building beside what was Keating’s Pub on Jervis Street. It’s very tall and looks like another Lego brick job. Considering, there’s going to be the new street connecting on to the Millennium bridge, more thought should have been put into it.

Well kefu it is a Zoe development but they got the site from the corpo on condition they had an architectural competition for the site. I think it is Grafton Architects who did the design here. As opposed to the usual Zoe/Fabrizia (I think they call themselves that as well sometimes, same logo though) job of the builder designing it themselves (often Liam Carroll himself). As for what is going on on the Abbey street site I agree, it looks dirt cheap and not at all “designed”. In terms of this area a number of questions arise – should this be an office development in what is now a mostly retail/residential area (Its a bit like putting an office block in Temple Bar). Secondly, Isn’t it about time that Dublin Bus built something on what is essentially an unused site (especiall since all the buses have now moved out of Abbey Street to Allow LUAS construction work. Thirdly, isn’t it about time that the buildings (from around 1986) on the corner of Liffey Street and Abbey Street (the former EBS branch) were demolished and replaced with something a bit taller. Two storeys looks qiute ludicrous at this point (and any other) in the city centre CBD. This would also hide the view of the Jervis Centre car park and the M&S loading depot – surely this can only be a good thing!
