I was walking down towards Barrow St the other day to have a look at how the Montevetro building was getting on since the on-site camera doesn’t really give a good view of it and I was struck by the potential of the old Boland’s Mill.

It is sited in a great part of Town what with Montevetro, Altovetro and the new Grand Canal Dock all surrounding it. It’s a building of similar height to Montevetro and Altovetro so there must be plenty of floorspace within it to do something really good.

Boland’s Mill could easily be transformed into an amenity for an area full of apartments and office blocks. A museum dedicated to Dublin’s docklands, a community centre, cafés, an art-house cinema, shops and restaurants could all be housed within the building. It would give the area a huge lift by transforming an old, shabby and under-used building into something much more useful.

There is some work being carried out at the site (I live in the Gasworks on Barrow St and pass the Mills most days). The Mills have planning permission for a mammoth redevelopment but I suspect it suits for the pace of work to tend towards the glacial in the present economic climate.

Are you sure they have planning? I only remember the God awful one that was turned down. Any info?

Well it would be good to see Boland’s Mill revived and put to good use as a civic amenity. As it stands, it’s a black hole.
