I live in derry, well at least for a few more more weeks before i head back to uni, but I love the city, i would hate to see high rise buildings going up around the place, I think regeneration is what should be concentrated on in this city, I hate the richmond centre and foyleside shopping centre, i feel there was very little thought put into the urban plan of these building!
The city itself is quiet and laid back with a really friendly atmospheare and i would hate to see this ruined by high rise or large impersonal development!

From what I’ve heard there is a £100 million development planned along the river front.
Also, I’ve read that 45% of the population is under 25, I’m assuming this will cause the city to expand at a huge rate.
A lot more (tasteful) development should be happening in the city as unemployment is quite ripe. The only job I could find this summer was in Mc Donald’s which I refused. So the people of Derry aren’t as lazy as usually thought, it seems that there isn’t enough employment to suit the population.

So is anything happening in Derry then? Any photos/dwgs of the Millenium Forum? – couldn’t find any meself and don’t know much else apart from the history. Are people moving there or just to Letterkenny? Was there a couple of years ago too, at night – couldn’t figure out if I was actually in the city centre or not, so didn’t see too much of it, seemed pleasant enough and very friendly but a bit sleepy as mentioned earlier. Gotta have a few pictures for a decent thread!

I have to admit, I just love the charming city of Derry! In my opinion the diamond is one of the nicest planned squares in Ireland.

I must also say I’m not a fan of the retail dev along the folye,
The Folye Bridge is one the most spectacular bridges in Ireland.
Although I have not been in Derry for quite sometime so, I’d love to see pics here! As Derry should get more of a mention from time to time!

Something I came across on the news a few months back, just to note, whets the street behind the Cathedral called, it was a bustling street in the 1960s and they pedstrianised it a good few years ago,
They were proposals to restore traffic back onto the street, due to the deadness and less activity.

Can anyone recall what I’m talking about??

I’ll try to get some pictures of buildings and pubs in the city before my reluctant return to (S)Huddersfield this week.
I will be climbing Scalp Mt tomorrow if the weather keeps up so there’ll be nice views of the city and Donegal from there!

odonnell & toumey are ment to be building a centre for the irish language in derry soon John Toumey showed immages of ot at a not so long ago lecture in Bolton st. last year. looks great could be one of thir best buildings yet I recon. No sign of it on the web site though.

By posting the photos.. I was hoping to start a discussion about the buildings up there – not the name of the darned place!

Very PC Fearg, but you should have seen that one coming. The very use of the name Londonderry is like a red rag to a bull for a lot of people and rightly so in my opinion when one considers the historical aspect. I believe the name chage is going through the courts up there at the moment so hopefully that will result in Derry being properly recognised. I realise this is not a political forum but it`s not something you can just ignore. Nuff said.

The neutral “Maiden City” is also an option.:)

When the UK’s Queen mother died recently BBC NI did a feature where they interviewed certain grandees who had met the old drunk. One Orange Man had met her twice; the second time they met he was disappointed she didn’t remember him so he reminded her he was from the Orange Lodge in Londonderry. According to him she appeared distracted, began to walk away, then spun on her heel and replied ‘oh! you mean Derry!’. To which he responded, ‘well if Derry’s good enough for you, it’s good enough for me!’.

So that’s it settled, if Britain’s last Queen-Empress, the nationalists of Derry and virtually everybody on this board, not to mention local Protestants whom by all accounts agree, it is Derry. The only people I’ve ever heard it calling it Londonderry are gullible cartographers, Belfast Protestants and apologists for a psuedo fascist regime in Dublin who think that they are somehow being helpful call it Londonderry.

There again, as a southern Protestant who despises Ulster Unionism I guess I’ll always be somewhat biased!

That First Presbyterian Church is really a beauty, what a lovely stone. I would like to visit Derry pity it’s so far away.
