At Cross Guns Bridge there is an Art Deco Garage, which has lied vacant for some time. It has loads of boards/ signs stuck onto it. However, some of this has collapsed (something to do with the weather?) and it has revealed more of the buildings authentic detailing – more striking a building than I originally thought. It does not appear as amateur a construction as I originally thought.
Does anyone know what’s happening with this building?

Who gets what listed? I know this is a discussion board, but do those in control of the site take note of things under dicussion (that being they will take action on matters raised on the site?)

I wasn’t suggesting anyone HAD to get it listed. It was more a rhetorical comment. You’ll recall from earlier times when the Wiggs Teape building was demolished that many people were astonished that it hadnt been listed for protection. It was just a comment. -

I can’t find it on the list of protected
structures searching for either “Cross Guns” or Garage. The only mention of Cross Guns is
‘Cross Guns Bridge/Fifth Lock, Royal
Canal Dublin 7 Crossguns Quay: multi-storey stone former mill building’
Dosn’t sound like a deco garage to me.I don’t know the area myself but a lot of the area ajoining the canal is a “Proposed Candidate Special Area of Conservation” on the city development plan. (the bits striped in red on the attached).

Hello all!
Just to inform yiz that the fascia boards have been removed last week from this wonderful building, and its original beauty is being revealed for all to see. Its design was more sophisticated than originally thought. Go have a look – they have demolished a side extension, but I think they are preserving the original. Can wait to see what they will do with it; here’s hoping that it won’t be filled with PVC and painted pink!!

Is this the Arc Hire building at the end of the Whitworth Road?

Yep, but the rubbish has been removed (signs, clutter, “fake” add-ons to the facade). Worth a closer inspection. Less “heavy” than originally thought.

What’s going on – are they knocking it?

Looks like it, having had a quick look passing it on a bus this afternoon, the detailing is rather crude, much more of the country garage than urban cinema strain of “art deco”. Will photograph it tomorrow.

Do they have planning permission?

Its not as poor as you might expect –
The detail is more intricate than a “country garage”!
If more of the timber panels are removed you will see how refined the actual building actually is……..

As an aside, the red brick buildling at the back of this (latterly integrated into the site I believe) was Glasnevin railway station.

I remember reading that in the Indo property section last year so I assume that’s the case

Work seems to be nearly finished on this and the signs for the pub are up – it’s the ‘Porterhouse North’!
Look forward to having a pint in it soon!:D -

The art deco building has finally been revealed for all to see. The owners have done a magnificent job inside – considering there was little of any importance inside previously. They have done a splendid job on the building and credit where credit is due. Art Deco has at last has its day in the sun…. After so many depressing demolitions, maybe an appreciation for art deco is filtering into the mainstream public (and builders also!).

According to my sources the “art deco” interior is quite tacky

haven’t been inside but the exterior does look good

A tacky interior to an art deco cocktail lounge would be pretty authentic. Must pay a visit this weekend.
-
March 16, 2004 at 2:19 pm #723675J. SeerskiParticipant
What defines tacky? In terms of cost – it certainly has been a lavish spend on the building – apparently over 2 million. Retro sometimes is called tacky, but then where would we be in describing the GPO, Clerys etc – all retro classical….

Money spent does not equate good design

There was a long queue of young patrons outside last night, almost spilling out on to the road, so that business seems to be good.
