Hey lads, how’s it going?
Emm, I kinda need your help on two or three things, from a terminology viewpoint. I’m writing my second thesis, and it’s on Cork architecture. Yet I’m not in the country anymore, not a native speaker either, and I’m not an architect at all. Wrote my thesis last year on Dublin architecture, but now I’m pretty rusty.
Was writing on the G.P.O. last night and was a bit struggling to depict the building.A few questions:

How do you call these? (the things with the 1877 moulding on it). I called them blind window openings. But I’m probably wrong.

Are those block modillions, both under the corona of the string-course cornice and of the top cornice? Can block modillions be a bit triangular? I take it they’re not mutules as there are no triglyphs…
Another question:

What’s the story with the balustrade? T.F. McNamara called it a cut limestone balustrade forming the building’s parapet, and I called it a solid parapet alternating with a cut limestone balustrade. Now in fairness McNamara is obviously right, but would someone explain it to me?
Also, on this same picture, there are a number of pilasters on the façade of the building. Are those half-pilasters or pilasters?
The architect used also a lot of recesses and ????? (things breaking forward like), do you call this a ‘variety in the treatment of the surface’? I cannot remember the cool phrasing at all for that.Thanks a million if ye can help me lads. I know there’s google and everything but I’d rather have professionnal help. My books are shit, scarce and I’m in France at the moment.

So I’m in UCBN (Université de Caen-Basse Normandie), and been studying Languages, then did a masters in Irish History, so I’m an historian like, not an architect at all, just wrote my thesis on Dublin architecture last year cause I was struck by the architecture when I was an ERASMUS student in Cork. Used to read a lot of Craig and McParland especially about Gandon, but now I’m really rusty. And this year I’m doing my second year of masters and decided to write about Cork architecture in the 19th century, because I’ve been living there two years.
