Debate on the 3 different metro routes proposed by the RPA (Railway Procurement Agency) appears entirely focused on its route through the north Dublin suburbs.
But what about its proposed route through the city centre and how it should best serve urban and suburban Dubliners, and the rest of the country, both north and south?
It would appear incredible that none of the 3 metro routes proposed provide a link with the largest interchange in the city centre, i.e. Busarus-Connolly, which is the hub for 4 different transport systems.
Under current proposals, passengers travelling on (1) the LUAS line from Tallaght, or (2) the DART from Dun Laoghaire/Howth, or (3) the TRAIN from Belfast/Sligo, or (4) the BUS from Cork (or indeed from anywhere in the entire country), will have no direct link with the metro system and hence to the airport. Another proposed transport system, (5) the DOCKLANDS LIGHTRAIL would also not have a direct metro link. I confess that I am unfamiliar with any capital city that does not have a rail link linking its airport with a major railway station or transport interchange in its city centre.
Instead it would appear that the thousands of passengers arriving at the Busarus-Connolly interchange will have to take 2 stops along the LUAS line to alight at Abbey St., and then walk 5 minutes up O’Connell St. to the nearest metro stop. Imagine an elderly or disabled passenger undertaking this route at night, in the rain, and dragging their baggage behind them?
Might I suggest the RPA provide some trolley racks along our National thoroughfare to facilitate the ease of baggage movement as part of its integrated transport policy, which may also have the additional benefit of storing mugged tourists and passengers, until such time as a bed becomes available?

While the RPA’s preference is for the ‘Central route’ option, the ‘West route’ option at least proposes a connection in the city centre to the RAIL and DART services at Tara St. Under current proposals, this same route passes under Beresford Place (tantalisingly close to Busarus-Connolly), but for some inexplicable reason, does not create a link.
In my view, the Dublin metro link should not be just about linking the airport and north suburban Dublin to the commercial city centre, but should in addition, link up with the existing transport infrastructures serving the greater Dublin area and the country as a whole (and vice versa). An amended ‘West route’ in the city centre to include a direct stop (or an indirect stop via an underground ambulator from Beresford Place) to Busarus-Connolly would achieve a safe and integrated transport system for the capital and country as a whole.
Like current proposals to belatedly link the 2 LUAS lines together via an extension to the St. Stephen’s Green line, are we to see history repeating itself by not joining the METRO to the transport systems at Busarus-Connolly?

My understanding is that the metro will terminate at a new station at St. Stephen’s Green which will also house a station (at a separate level) for the interconnector between Heuston and Connolly. This should allow for transition between all modes.

In any case, under T21, there will be a large station in Stephens Green linking the metro with the interconnector – the underground section of a DART line which will serve Heuston, Pearse and stations north of Connolly. The biggest flaw or gap in all the proposed routes is a lack of integration with the Maynooth line which it crosses near Phibsboro/Drumcondra. This line is already very busy with commuter and inter-city traffic and will get even busier when the Navan link is operational. It will be simply outragous if two high capacity/high frequency rail lines pass each other at right angles and no form of integration is provided simply because of power politics between Irish Rail and the RPA.

      What interconnector?

      indeed indeed.

if there is a northern metro there won’t be an interconnector.

Which is why i keep bleating on about the madness of building the metro when the other option is so much better.

by the way this stephen’s green station doesnt connect with the dart or the red line. it doesn’t connect with anything ! if an interconnector is built in fifteen years then it will connect with one dart line instead of both.

jptw: lisbon has no airport metro, neither does dullas/washington, nyc doesn’t to some approximation: the subway takes an hour and the raillink doesn’t go to manhattan. just of the top of my head.

i amn’t argueing against the airport metro, but i am argueing against saying things that aren’t true.
