      Hello All,

As you can see I this is my first post. I am currently studying for my Leaving Certificate exams. I know it’s early days yet but I am beginning to panic over my college course choices. I am torn between Architecture in either UL or WIT or Architectural Technology in CIT. I do Technical Drawing and Construction Studies in school (in which I hope to get an A2 and A1 grade in respectively). My Constructiion project is a mainly drawn one of survey and working drawings of a house before and after an extension is added to it. Also I have added photographs I took of subsidence work (underpinning) which was done before the extension was built. Would this be acceptable for the portfolio in either UL or WIT?

Also could someone please point out to me clearly what the differences between the full Architecture degree and the Architectural Technology degree are and if there is anywhere you can do a portfolio course in Cork?

      Much Appreciated,

      Jack

Have you talked to a career guidance councillor?

Yeah I did talk to the guy in my school but he’s fairly useless. I’ve got an appointment with a guidance counsellor on the 16th of November but I want to get cracking on the portfolio some time during the mid-term break (which starts on Friday).

Confused – Good luck with the exams. I’d say the best tact is to phone up the course directors and speak directly to them. If they can’t be bother I’d strike them off the list. Also, given they are design courses I would be somewhat swayed by the quality of the prospectus and web-site pages. If they can’t put these together again one would have concerns. WIT = Waterford? Is this the new course. If so the directos – lectures – tutors sound very impressive and with loads of energy. The latter you cab never have enough of in getting the best from students. Also, Waterford is a pretty nice place …. follow the heart but listen to the head!

      Many thanks again

You have a lot of questions in there…& sounds like you are quite technical. The diffrence between architect & technologist is one of ambition & inclination (also time & money). Generally the technologist is happy to technically develope what has already been broadly framed by the architect, technicans often end up resenting this position though.

So as a technical person I should perhaps aim for the Architectural Technician position? (I hope to do a Masters in this area and hopefully specialise in Architectural Conservation or Fire & Safety)

There is a good area on the RIAI website about careers. Includes recommended reading. Yes, sounds like you might be technician in the making. Very often the lines blur as time goes on. Architect the profession has not existed for more than 25 😉 0 years yet anyway.
