A symbol of Porto, the two-level iron bridge – Dom Luís I wasdesigned by the Belgian engineer Téophile Seyrig, a student of Gustave Eiffel. He later designed a railway bridge – Maria Pia with Eiffel in the city. At the time of construction its span of 172 m was the longest of its type in the world.
