Born in Limerick on 7 April 1831, the eldest son of John Fogerty, and older brother of William Fogerty (1833-78), with whom he seems to have shared offices with in London at one time. After serving his apprenticeship with his father in Limerick, he went to England in 1856 to study at University College, London. In about 1865 he set up in business on his own, ‘constructing water- and steam-power mills, factories and other works in Ireland’ as well as ‘private dwelling houses in and around London’.
