Born and educated in Scotland, little is known of his earlier work in the North of England, where local directories list him as clerk-of-works in 1894-98, and as an architect there from 1898 to 1906. In Winnipeg, he formed a shortlived partnership with Daniel Smith (1840-1913) as Smith & Bruce.
