The present ford bridge was built by Thomas Rhodes, a cousin of the famous Cecil Rhodes,

Proposed alterations to the 16-arch masonry Shannonbridge of 1757, which included a new opening section. Rhodes was responsible for other work on the Shannon navigation including the bridge at Athlone.
