Thomas Hopper (1776–1856)

An English architect of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, much favoured by King George IV, and particularly notable for his work on country houses across southern England, Wales and Ireland.

1820-45 – Penrhyn Castle, Wales

Architect: Thomas Hopper

Originally a medieval fortified manor house, founded by Ednyfed Fychan. In 1438, Ioan ap Gruffudd was granted a licence to crenellate and he founded the stone castle and added a tower house.

1825 – Purdysburn House, Newtownbreda, Co. Down

Architect: Thomas Hopper

Described simply as “Purdysburn, the splendid mansion of Narcissus Batt, Esq., built after a design by Hopper”

1856 – Gosford Castle, Co. Armagh

Architect: Thomas Hopper

Construction of the castle began in 1819 and finished in the 1850s. It was commissioned by Archibald Acheson,
