Standard Bank of Canada was established in 1872 as the St. Lawrence Bank. In 1876 it was renamed the Standard Bank of Canada. By 1907 it acquired the Western Bank of Canada, a regional bank headquartered in Oshawa, Ontario. Acquired the Sterling Bank in 1924 at which point it had 243 branches, of which 176 were in Ontario. It was merged into the Canadian Bank of Commerce in 1928.
