The Examination Schools were designed by Thomas Graham Jackson after an architectural competition in 1876 and their construction was completed in 1882.

The school was setup in the 1870s, following the Endowed Schools Act of 1869. Pupils were now required to pay fees to attend the school and a new building was constructed,
After tenders to construct the building were examined, it was decided that the budget did not exist to construct this design and it was dropped.
