In 1891, at the instigation of Miss Florence Wynn, a provisional committee meet in Dublin with the aim of founding a national sanatorium to treat tuberculosis.
Published in The Building News, November 6th 1903. Closed in 2006 and awaiting conversion into apartments.

Castlerea was established as part of the system of district mental hospitals in 1939 as a Psychiatric Hospital annex to St Bridget’s Hospital in Ballinasloe.
The new sanatorium at Ballyowen was formally handed over on 28th April 1952. This was later reopened as a psychiatric hospital,
