Philip Charles Hardwick (1822-92)

According to the Irish Architectural Archive, “Most of his known Irish commissions appear to have resulted either directly or indirectly from the patronage of the third Earl of Dunraven, who employed him to complete Adare Manor and to carry out other work in the village of Adare. Hardwick also built a church for Lord Dunraven at Sneem, Co. Kerry. Lord Dunraven was closely involved with St Columba’s College, Rathfarnham, for which Hardwick designed additions. It was presumably Hardwick’s work at Adare, which included the improvement of the Catholic church in the village, which resulted in his receiving the commissions to design the Catholic cathedral and the Church of St Alphonsus Liguori in nearby Limerick city.”
